     Unusual Problems

There is often a great curiosity about how odd or unusual a problem might be perceived. Some of these problems are very difficult or embarrassing for people to talk about, especially after years of dealing with it alone. Individuals who have been through this type of fearful secrecy can find it a great relief to finally talk to someone who has helped with similar problems and can offer help and answer questions without being shocked with the private information.

Since children may view this site, specific situations will not be described. There are really no graphic details needed to give a generalized idea of some unusual problems which people occasionally deal with. Some might be described as:

  • Behaviors which give pleasure and a feeling of disgust, but persist anyway
  • Dressing or acting in ways unusual for one's gender, when the behavior is confusing or unwanted
  • Behaviors with food, hidden from others
  • Unwanted thoughts/acts which might be immoral or illegal
  • Obsessive/compulsive thoughts and/or behaviors
  • Confusion about what is real or not
  • Desires for unacceptable activities

Medications may be helpful for some problems listed here, but not in all cases. An assessment would be needed before a course of treatment could be prescribed, and treatment might require the additional services of a physician.
